Gregor Flother/Formtyp, born 1978 in Cologne/Germany, is a graphic designer with a focus on corporate identity and illustration. Graduating Communication Design (Dipl.Des. FH) with distinction at the University of Applied Sciences Duesseldorf in 2013, he has since worked for clients as big as streetwear giants Vans, Ezekiel or Eastpak. Gregor’s work has also been featured in various art publications from 1995 (Graffiti Art #04 Rheinland) until recent (Street Art Cologne, 2014). Especially his early work is inspired by the graffiti and skateboard culture, since he was an sponsored skateboarder and essential member of the acclaimed „Dom Posse“, a 90ies street-skateboarding super group as well as an established graffiti artist during hip hop´s golden years. Today his field of work appears to be multidisciplinary at the interface between design and street culture. He lives and works in Cologne/Germany.
INTERVIEW
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
Multidisciplinary at the interface between design and street culture
WHAT DOES “OFF THE WALL” MEAN TO YOU?
First thing that comes to my mind when I hear or read “off the wall“ is something that is “outstanding”. For example the never heard of skater that shows up at your local spot and leaves everyone with an open mouth saying, wtf did he just do? that is off the wall!
WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN INSPIRATIONS?
Skateboarding, art history, pop culture, Geek stuff, weirdo stuff.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PAIR OF VANS?
As far as I can remember it must have been around 1991-1992 when I got my first pair of Vans, they were some Bordeaux Red Chukka Boots I think. Back at the time Ocean Howell (Pro skater) was rockin those alot when he was skating in videos and we were huge fans of his skating.
WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE REACTIONS TO YOUR WORK?
  1. Awesome canvas! – If I only had the space for it, I would immediately buy it.
  2. I want to get this tattooed on me.
  3. wow, if I were you I would fly around the world and only do art.
IF YOU COULD DO A COLLABORATIVE PIECE WITH ANY ARTIST, LIVING OR DEAD, WHO WOULD IT BE?
Because of the fact that I was and that I am still such an skate nerd I probably would time travel to early nineties San Francisco and colaborate with “twist” aka “Barry McGee” just because I loved the Sf, EMB, Mad Circle, Skateera which was such an influence on me when I was growing up.
WHAT ARE SOME FAVORITE WORKS YOU’VE CREATED?
(at the moment the ones I send over)
WHAT THINGS DO YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR 2017/2018?
  1. Looking forward to time travel to SF.
  2. Create more tattoos for Willow Wildgrube.
