Xaviera Altena was born and raised in Rotterdam, Netherlands. From a young age, she loved to draw and play with bright colors. From the age of 10 she knew she wanted to be an illustrator. Right now, she works for a variety of editorial clients, MTV, Die Zeist and often collaborates with local initiatives and projects in Rotterdam.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
My style encompasses bold line work, poppy colours and sparse details. I reference modern day issues and news stories in my work, combining them with ‘90s pop culture influences.
WHAT DOES “OFF THE WALL” MEAN TO YOU?
“Off the Wall” means being radically yourself and not giving a damn about what the mainstream thinks.
WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN INSPIRATIONS?
I get my inspiration from all kinds of things: music, fashion, tv shows, movies, everyday life, people I see on the streets. For me inspiration doesn't come from one place it comes from many and from the people you surround yourself with.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PAIR OF VANS?
Completely black Half Cabs, still have them!
WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE REACTIONS TO YOUR WORK?
My favourite reactions are from people who tell me that they felt happy when they saw my work. They felt included and recognized something of themselves in the illustration.
IF YOU COULD DO A COLLABORATIVE PIECE WITH ANY ARTIST, LIVING OR DEAD, WHO WOULD IT BE?
This is really difficult, but I really like Santigold for her aesthetics and powerful shows, so I would choose her.
WHAT ARE SOME FAVORITE WORKS YOU’VE CREATED?
My favourite of the last few months is definitely the Dog in Jeans, he looks like he doesn't give a shit! Also, my horoscope illustrations for MTV are really nice. But I love my personal work the most — girls with all sorts of backgrounds who are kicking ass, or illustrations that have a little critical point of view on this society.
WHAT THINGS DO YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR 2017/2018?
I've planned to start painting (I keep postponing that, I should really just begin), maybe do some more prints on fabrics and always keep exploring new and exciting projects.
